Όταν ήταν 8 χρονών ο θείος του που κυνηγούσε πάπιες του ζητούσε να κολυμπά στη λίμνη και να μαζεύει τις νεκρές πάπιες και να του τις φέρνει. Στα 9 άρχισε να γράφει ποίηση.

Don't waken the dream that is dying,

Don't stir the aim that has failed.

Life brought me too early to trial;

The loss, the defeat - what availed?

Ιδρυτής του Imaginism, ποιητικού κινήματος στη Ρωσία μαζί με τους Anatoly Mariengof, Vadim Ahershenevich, και Riurik Ivnev.

Είπε: "Just realize what a great thing Imaginism is! Words have become used up, like old coins, they have lost their primordial poetic power. We cannot create new words. Neologism and trans-sense language are nonsense. But we have found a means to revive dead words, expressing them in dazzling poetic images. This is what we Imaginists have created. We are the inventors of the new."

Στην Αμερική είναι γνωστός σαν σύζυγος της Isadora Dunkan – την οποία παντρεύτηκε για πολύ λίγο καιρό και με την οποία ταξίδεψε και σιχάθηκε την Αμερική.

Κατάθλιψη, αλκοόλ. Το 1922 έγραψε "It's prostitutes I read my poems to, / Bandits I toast in burning alcohol." Το αγαπημένο του καφέ ήταν το "Pegasus Stall", το σημείο συνάντησης των Imaginists ποιητών. Γύρισε πίσω στη Ρωσία, παντρεύτηκε την Sofia Tolstaya (εγγονή του Tolstoy). Αλκοόλ, μανία, παραισθήσεις… Μπήκε σε κλινική. Έφυγε ξαφνικά λίγο μετά και νοίκιασε ένα δωμάτιο στο Hotel d’ Angleterre στο Leningrad. Κρεμάστηκε στο δωμάτιό του αφού προηγουμένως με το αίμα του έγραψε:

"Good-bye, my friend, good-bye.

My dear one, you are in my breast.

predestined parting

Promises a meeting ahead.

Good-bye, my friend, without hand, without word

No sorrow and no sadness in the brow.

In this life, dying is nothing new,

But living, of course, isn't novel either."
